Abstract

It is the task of nursing staffs to deal with and to ease the emotional burden of the cancer patients. It is also necessary for them to understand the nature of their anxiety and depression.
The present study analyzed the patients´ negative, depressive feelings and symptorn-related distress in relation to sociodemographic: parameters, knowledge of their disease, and the therapeuticmodalities they received.
Samples were selected from 132 cancer patients hospitalized at two major university hospitals in Taegu during the period of October-December, 1993.
Authors adopted the modified version of Symptom Distress Scale (SDS : McCorkle & Young, 1978 : Um, 1986) and Selfrating Depression Scale (SRDS : Zung, 1965) for this study.
1. The results showed that the rating of SRDS was 47.18 /80 and the rating of SDS was 47. 15 /90. There was a positive correlation between the scores of SRDS and SDS (r=0.6906).
2. In further analysis, it was shown that age of the patients was significantly related with the level of depression : the most depressed group was 40s(mean SRDS 52.94). The patients who are not told for the true nature of their disease, who are complaining the continuous pain, and who are anticipating pain showed significantly high scores on SRDS ratings.
3. The SDS ratings were evaluated in relation to the socio demographic parameters : The unmarried showed significantly higher ratings than the married. The patients who did not have family support suffered the most whereas those with spouse did the least. Those undergoing chemotherapeutic regimens with radiation therapy, those complaining continuous pain, and those anticipating the eventual terminal cancer pain scored sigificantly high scores on the SDS.
